  THE STREET CORNER, February 1972

oil paintings, fifty-four drawings, thirty-seven composition studies, more than 100 recorded sales and 70 Time Covers. His many exhibits throughout Canada were rewarding and lead to many devoted admirers. In addition, thirty-five of Safran’s Time portraits now hang in the Smithsonian Institution and National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C.

“I am what you might call a people painter. My approach is a humanist approach, which is not a popular one these days. The prevailing view for many years has been that man is alone, shivering in a corner, unable to cope with the forces that are set against him, so that it’s all a useless exercise. My opinion is diametrically opposed to that.” - Bernard Safran

THE WINDOW, June 1970

These paintings by romantic artist, Bernard Safran, The City Project series, were roduced during the early 1970's after leaving TIME magazine as one of their premier cover artists. The artist's idea for the series was that the environment was quite hostile to people, but he wanted to portray the people as being undefeated by it, "regardless of the hostility and the menace that was everywhere aroun them."
